Considerable documentation has been collected pertinent to pension requests, including applications made in 1892, 1893, 1894, 1896, 1897 and 1898 and signed by N. H. Farrington (his mark) with the residence listed as Summit, Alabama in Blount County. Affidavits as to his faithful service were sworn by several comrades in arms, including his brother in law, George Roberts, husband of Mary Beatrice (Dollie) Rhodes. From available records, it appears his pension was discontinued as indicated by letters written by his wife, Mary Ann, following his death in 1905.

The following is dated 29 September 1913:

Haleyville, Ala. Rt. #3.

Genl. Fred S. Ferguson,
Montgomery, Ala.

Dear Sir:

Your letter to me of Sept. 18th, was duly received. I am a poor, frail, widow, and it is impossible for me to come to Montgomery to see you. I do not know what to do. About the 4th of August I had the Probate Judge of this county send to the state auditor three affidavits which my son had gone away over into another county and procure from some of my husband's comrades in the army. You do not seem to have gotten these affidavits.

Will you not be kind enough to go to the State Auditor and ask him is he has not got those affidavits from Judge Curtis of Winston County. If you can get them, please look over them and tell me what the trouble is.

I do not know why my husband's name is W. H. Farrington, when it is N. H. Farrington. It seems like it is hard to get things right. Look up and see if the records do not show his name right.

Please write me just as soon as you get this letter, and let me know if you pass on these matters, or whether it will be best for me to wait until the Board meets. I thought I would try to get up enough money to send a lawyer down there to present my case to the board. What do you think about that? If I do that should he come to see you or wait until the Board meets? I certainly can not send him but one trip, even if I am able to arrange that - so I want to be sure that he comes at the right time.

Pray give this letter your kind attention. I do not know what I shall do, if I lose this little pension.

Very resp -

Mrs. M. A. Farrington, widow of N. H. Farrington

My address is Haleyville, R.F.D. #3.

Another letter, evidently in Mary Ann's handwriting, reads as follows:

Haley Ville, Ala R#3
August 21 - 1915

Mr. Allgood State Auditor if this blank is not filled out right pleas let me know. Also let me know whether or not I am reclassified or not. I have got the blank back and dont under stand any thing about it.

Yours truley

Mrs. M. A. Farrington

Mary Ann died four months later on December 23, 1915.
