may have died in steamboat explosion returning from war
HMT talked to RNT about significant family member dying in 1865 steamboat
explosion on major river returning from Civil War, probably her husband's
maternal grandfather. She talked about the event several times, with great
importance - the most serious loss of life in the history of river
transportation.
Sultana was "greatest maritime disaster of all time" with 1585-1647 lives lost., out of a total of 2400-2600, on a vessel whose legal limit was 376. Many victims were Union soldiers returning home from incarceration at Andersonville and other Confederate prisons. from Robert G. Albion, Five Centuries of Famous Ships. see also J. W. Elliot, Transport to Disaster.
age 29 at enlistment, drummer

"My dear daughter -
In the future years to come
There will be sunshine and gloom.
But remember there is one
Whose heart has plenty of room.
Your troubles always to share,
You will find a haven there.
