"...property at the corner of Broadway, 26th and Valdez...All the land was developed by Oakland pioneers, among them Waldemar A. Smith.... The part of the property on Broadway was occupied originally by the livery stable, operated by Smith, and then was turned into a blacksmith shop. It has remained in the possession of the Smith family from the time of its purchase in 1890 until the present deal was consumated. The imprint of the smithy tool may still be seen in the concrete sidewalk in front of the main door."
